The temporal bone lab at Providence Hospital is the site of three yearly national/international courses focused on otologic and neurotologic surgery. Physicians from the Michigan Ear Institute (MEI) are the faculty, using the temporal bone lab to teach attending and resident ear-nose-throat physicians various surgical procedures.
The temporal bone lab is equipped with 15 stations. Each station includes a full set of microsurgical instruments, operating binocular microscope, motorized drill, a suction irrigation system and a personal video monitor. Otologic laser systems are available for hands-on training of laser surgery techniques.
The intensive five-day course includes topics such as basic and applied anatomy of the temporal bone, current concepts in otologic diagnosis, surgical management of ear disease, practice in micro dissection of the temporal bone and laser techniques.
“The temporal bone lab allows us to teach physicians specialized surgical techniques that they can then apply in their medical practice”. “The temporal bone lab enables us to develop and perfect new techniques before they’re performed on actual patients, allowing us to offer high-quality, state-of-the-art patient care”.
